A poor day for local news

In spite of the response to the public consultation … In spite of cross-party opposition … Ofcom’s ‘weak decision’, as it has been described by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), offers those who value quality local journalism in the north and north east little joy.
Action by the union has thus far avoided compulsory redundancies in the newsroom. But the NUJ’s campaign was as much about defending the local distinctiveness of news output as it was about jobs.
Democratic Left Scotland has followed the story over a number of months. We encouraged those reading the website to take part in the consultation. Like many others, we will now keep a close eye on the impact that the decision has and on the future plans of STV management.
