Responding to STV job cuts

ree

A recent emergency meeting of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) Scottish Executive Council indicated it will take action to respond to the threatened job cuts at STV.

STV currently hold the licences that cover central and north of Scotland. Journalists work from offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee. Significant job cuts have been threatened, with 60 posts believed to be in jeopardy, as well as the Aberdeen office.

The planned changes at STV will see the flagship news programme for the north axed.  Reaction to this proposal in the north east has been one of dismay. Local journalism is more important now than ever. Misinformation and unverified social media output need to be countered by critical examination of facts.

An early development has been the Scottish Government’s Culture Secretary Angus Robertson expressing concern for the jobs that are at risk and the sustainability of the services STV provides.

We extend our solidarity to the NUJ members at STV.
