Mandela memorial statue for Glasgow

The persistence and committment of the Scottish Nelson Mandela Memorial Campaign is expressed in a key moment on Friday 9th October.
Campaigners and friends will publicly unveil the Nelson Mandela Memorial statue in Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow.
The event will run from 4pm-5pm.
9th October marks the anniversary of Mandela’s 1993 visit to Glasgow to collect the freedoms of nine UK cities. Glasgow was notably the first city in the world to grant Mandela the Freedom of the City in 1981 while he was still imprisoned on Robben Island.
The event is being promoted by, amongst others, the Scottish Trades Union Congress.
Scottish trade unionists have long supported the campaign to memorialise Mandela - not only is this a historic event which recognises the remarkable, inspiring and successful struggle to end apartheid in South Africa; it confirms the commitment of progressive people in Glasgow and the whole country to promote the values of democracy and anti-racism in times which, alas, need these principles reaffirming and realising once again.
