Aberdeen: More university job cuts on the horizon

In recent months, staff at the University of Aberdeen have been trying to tell anyone who will listen about the threat to jobs at the institution. The UCU trade union has taken action following the failure of management to fully engage and to rule out compulsory redundancies.
Our website has long indicated that that there are issues across higher education (HE) in Scotland - and the actions of management are exacerbating a difficult situation. The marketisation of HE has created unstable conditions for the advance of learning and research.
The Aberdeen Press and Journal appear to have grasped the potential impact on the local economy. The Scottish Government have again been warned of the dangers of aggressive management practice. The question now is - will they listen?
Some at Aberdeen fear a similar situation to Dundee emerging. Aberdeen UCU have sat alongside trades unionists from Dundee, Edinburgh and Strathclyde to press the point to the Scottish Government Education. Will they act.
Scotland higher education institutions are under attack. The new Scottish Government will be measured on its ability to create a settlement that benefits students and staff and not simply the egos and ideologies of senior managers.
