Hectically organised meetings have been taking place across the airwaves. From the moment that it was hinted that President Trump was coming to Scotland, people and organisations began to meet. What is being planned will hopefully turn into a 'festival of resistance'. Given the reluctance of the state to share the 'leader of the free world's' movements, planning has not been without its difficulties. But peaceful, if noisy and colourful opposition, is to be expected.
Aberdeen - Saturday 26th July - Union Terrace Gardens at noon.
Edinburgh - Saturday 26th July - US Consulate at noon.
These are the arrangements to build around for now. But the situation is fluid, keep an eye on social media. A visit to Turnberry is also likely and folk in the West are planning too. Additional activities in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are to be expected (click here for more details).
The range of those protesting against the visit will be significant. The number of groups and individuals impacted by the actions of Trump and his supporters is ever growing. But anger is also pointed at the British Prime Minister and our First Minister, John Swinney, for meeting with Trump. The building of alliances to oppose the normalisation of the politics of the populist right is an ongoing process. One that takes thought as well as action. But taking a visible stand against Donald Trump and what he believes in is an important part of this.
